About
Tannis is an expressive, modern realism painter working in oil, acrylic and gouache. She likes to explore familiar yet curious narratives in her work. Her paintings evoke a range of emotions from curiosity and a sense of the surreal, to introspection and sadness, to whimsy and amusement. They are meant to start a story in the viewer’s mind. Her subjects reflect the importance of protecting innocence and preserving the childlike sense of wonder in life while acknowledging the underlying darkness. Rachel Carson once wrote: “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he/she needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him/her the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”
Cooking and exploring different world cuisines is another passion and creative outlet for Tannis so it is only natural that she has also been painting the subject of food culture. She loves to immerse herself in markets while travelling to soak up the atmosphere, observe the local community and revel in it’s bounty. Through her resulting artwork Tannis hopes to tickle the fancy of fellow food lovers and to help people recognize and appreciate how much food is part of our love of life, and how it defines our cultures and brings us together.
Through her work Tannis hopes to find kindred spirits, and to celebrate heartfelt, sensory and meaningful parts of life.
